Detox and cleanse your body for health and weight loss, Learn the trick to finally lose that stubborn fat and boost your energy to boot

You probably don’t give much thought to your liver (except maybe when you contemplate that third vodka soda), but its health is key to your overall health and weight. Your liver is the ultimate multitasker: It acts as a filter to remove toxins (like medications and alcohol) and nutrient byproducts such as ammonia from the blood; it aids in digestion by producing bile to help break down fat and absorb fat- and water-soluble vitamins and minerals; and it plays a part in regulating glucose, blood pressure, blood sugar, insulin, estrogen, testosterone, immunity, and blood cholesterol production and removal. And you thought you had a long to-do list!

Because of all of this activity, your liver may be in need of a little TLC. When it’s overworked, toxic residues can build up, causing inflammation that is associated with obesity. A stressed out liver can also cause fat to build up, especially around the belly. Added together, this can mean that no matter how much you restrict calories, weight loss is near impossible unless you detox your liver.

Before you jump to start a crazy cleanse, check if you have other symptoms of liver problems, such as fatigue, insomnia, brain fog, rashes or acne, digestive troubles (constipation, acid reflux, indigestion, bloating), high cholesterol, and blood sugar and insulin imbalances, which can lead to low energy, cravings, and excessive thirst and urination.

If you think your liver may be amiss, ask your doctor for a liver function test, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) test, or alanine aminotransferase (ALT) test, or request CAT or MRI scan to get a picture of your liver.

Once you have the results, you can make the following lifestyle changes to help remedy and even reverse the problem.

1. If you smoke, stop.

2. Use medications only when necessary, as even taking a Tylenol can have severe consequences on the liver.

3. Do not drink alcohol.

4. Eat and drink clean. Skip foods and beverages that contain high-fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, additives, hormones, preservatives, or artificial colors, and eat free-range or organic whenever possible. Your liver has to work harder to filter all this gunk.

RELATED: Clean Eating

5. Consume cruciferous vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collards, and cabbage. These contain sulphur compounds called glucosinolates that bind and eliminate toxins.

6. Ditch the salt, which can contribute to fluid retention and further strain the liver, and flavor foods with garlic, rosemary, dandelion, or chicory, which appear to support liver function.

7. Exercise the same way you take your prescription medicine: consistently and every day. Aim for at least a half hour, though more can be better, and be sure you’re doing intervals, which will help melt fat. A review published in the Journal of Hepatology found that a combination of diet and exercise was best to reduce body weight and therefore improve liver health.

Note: Olive oil helps the body absorb nutrients more efficiently and supports a healthy digestive system.

Stovetop Method: Follow the same instructions above for prep, cover, and simmer until veggies are tender, approximately 2 hour. Stir every 15 minutes to prevent sticking. Add spinach at the end of cooking time, remove from heat, cover and allow spinach to wilt before serving.

" Synthia: I tried your 3 day cleanse and detox just last month. It worked great. Jump started my weightloss journey by losing 2 lbs in the 3 days. Only lost 1 lb after that, but am very clear that I will do your cleanse and detox again in the future from time to time. Yes, I got a vicious headache on day 2 that lasted till the day after the cleanse, but I felt a lot better from doing it. Besides, I like green smoothies so that was not a problem for me. Still have to lose 42 lbs (till my goal) and also started on exercise again. Hope I can do it. I gave myself a lot of time (my goal is to lose 1 lb a week, which I am now 2 lbs behind on, but I'm not giving up on that yet. I'm in my 40's, so it's a very different road now than it was 10 years ago, but I am determined. "

OZ 3 Day Detox Cleanse

That's right folks, this self-proclaimed carboholic and sweet-tooth queen made it through the Dr. Oz 3-day detox! I ran across it on my Pinterest feed and decided then and there that I was going to try it. Not because I was looking to lose weight, but rather because I just felt...ick.

After over-indulging during the holidays (I gained back 8 pounds, y'all) I needed to jump start my system. I truly felt like I needed to cleanse my body and rid it of all the processed junk I loaded up on.

I've seen those lemon juice, honey and cayenne pepper detox plans. And I have heard of a few others that last 7-10 days. So why the Dr. Oz detox?

It's pretty simple really. I wanted to set a realistic goal. I figured 3 days was do-able, and with nutrient-packed ingredients like spinach, raspberries and almond butter it was much more appealing than a nutrient-starved plan like the honey/lemon/pepper drink. Plus, there is a different shake for breakfast, lunch and dinner so you don't feel like you are forcing down the same thing meal after meal.

OZ 3 Day Detox Cleanse

Q. Was it hard?
A. Surprisingly, even for a diet drop out like myself, I found this quite easy. Perhaps it was the short timeline, or maybe it was that the drinks were actually tasty. Either way, I found this plan pretty simple.

Q. Was it difficult to find the ingredients?
A. I have slowly been trying to be more conscious about my grocery habits, focusing on purchasing more from the "outer aisles" and less from the "middle aisles" (the process stuff). With that said I've never been one of those holistic naturopaths so I have only ventured down those 2 aisles with the cage-free, animal by-product free, health-nut products as a cut-through from the back of the store to the front. That is until I had to buy the stuff for this detox. I tried to look as natural as possible (pun intended) as I shopped for Coconut Oil and Flax Seed. And, I actually found it quite fun to explore all these health-related products. Did you know my local grocery store has a machine where you can grind your own almond or peanut butter? How cool!

But anyway, I was able to find everything at my regular old local HEB grocery store. If you live in an area where your regular grocer may not be as robust as this, I am sure everything can be purchased at a health food store or "natural" grocery chain like Sprouts or Whole Foods.

Q. How much was it?
A. I'll be honest, it wasn't cheap. I saved my receipt to add up what I purchased for the detox and the grand total was $92.43. I'll break it out for you below so you can see exactly what is needed. By the way, I buy organic for most of my produce...at the very least, the ones on this list. Oh, and I already had a few things like the green tea and the epsom salt...so you'll want to add a few more bucks to this...

  • Kale - {two containers @ 2.97ea} - $5.94
  • Spinach - {1 container} - $3.98
  • Bananas - {3 lbs} - $1.57
  • Raspberries - {three 6oz containers @ 3.98ea} - $11.94
  • Mango - {I purchased a bag of frozen chunks as I thought it would be easier} - $1.95
  • Cucumbers - {3 small} - $1.86
  • Coconut Oil - {Nature's Way, 16oz} - $9.99 on sale!
  • Ground Flax Seed - {16 oz} - $3.49
  • Almond Butter - {16 oz} - $8.47
  • Stevia - {I bought the little packets...you need 1 tsp/day which ended being 9 total packets} - $2.52
  • Coconut Water - {Zico, two liters @ 3.99ea} - $7.98 (only needed 1 liter!)
  • Almond Milk - {Blue Diamond, Unsweetened Vanilla, 1 qt} - $2.00
  • Cayenne Pepper {smallest spice shaker} - $1.99
  • Blueberries - {2 pints @ 3.77ea} - $7.54
  • Limes - {2ct} - $.40
  • Granny Smith apples - {4ct} - $1.77
  • Pineapple chunks - {I bought the pre-cut chunks from the produce dept, 20 oz} - $4.68
  • Lavender Oil - {for the baths} - $6.39
  • Probiotic Water - {I drank this in place of taking a multi-vitamin and probiotic pill} - $4.49
  • Celery - $1.20
GRAND TOTAL = $92.43...Yowzers...

But when you think of it as the cost of all meals and snacks that you'll consume for 3 whole days, it doesn't seem too far fetched. That'd be $30/day or $10/meal.

Q. Were they easy to make?
A. Yes! I splurged a bit and bought a $30 Oster My Blend personal blender which ended up being the perfect complement to this detox. It blended even the large chunks (that I was afraid my ancient blender would not) and did it all in a to-go type container that you simply flip over, unscrew the blender blade and screw on a sipper top. It was worth every penny!

Q. Were you hungry throughout the day?
A. I can honestly say I was not. Like, at all. The shakes were completely satisfying and kept me going until it was time for my next one. I doubted those who said the same when I read reviews online prior to starting. But it was true!

Q. How did they taste?
A. Surprisingly, I liked all of them. The breakfast one was definitely the best. And the lunch a close 2nd even though most of the reviews I read said it was horrible and hard to choke down. I did not find that to be the case. The dinner one was the most...how shall I say it...interesting in flavor. But even so, it was not bad. I was pleasantly surprised.

Q. How did they make you feel?
A. After day 1 I felt great. I had energy, I was still gung-ho. Day 2 was a little more difficult, I'll admit. I so badly wanted to just chew something. So I'd pop a piece of gum and be good. I did cheat a little that afternoon with a nibble of my son's nutri-grain bar (like, the smallest nibble ever), but then I felt extremely guilty and just plain disappointed in myself so it was easy to get back on track. Oh yeah, and I ate some broccoli that night, but it is a green veggie so I let that slide. By day 3, like any test of will-power, I was just ready for it to be over with. However I always woke up looking forward to the breakfast shake so that helped a little. After it was all said and done I seriously felt SO good. My mind seemed clear, my belly pooch seemed flatter and I just felt refreshed.

Q. Did it "clean you out"?
A. Not like I was expecting. If you are wondering if I spent hours on the john throughout the detox, I didn't. And when I did it was due to the fact that I was peeing more than usual. So, I guess that's how the "toxins" were making their way out of my system.

Q. Did you lose weight?
A. That was by far the biggest perk. I lost 5 pounds by the end of day 3! And, I'm happy to say that even going back to a "regular" diet (albeit one on the lighter side), I've kept it off!

Q. What was the biggest challenge?
A. While I expected it to be giving up food in its "regular" form, it was actually the time it took to prep the shakes. As a stay-at-home mom with 3 kids, I was pulled away from the kitchen every now and then. Uninterrupted it would only probably take 5-10 minutes. However sometimes it took me 20-25.

Q. Would you do it again?
A. Absolutely! My goal is to do it once/month. And the best part is that some of the higher priced items like the almond butter, coconut oil and lavender do not have to be purchased again for a while - there is enough left over. In fact, I have incorporated the breakfast and lunch shakes in to my everyday diet, replacing one meal a day since I've been back from Chicago.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR DETOX ELIXIR

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR DETOX ELIXIR

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR DETOX ELIXIR

Most people are determined to lose weight and make healthier choices in the upcoming days. I feel that making just plain good food choices is the best thing for long term overall health. But I don’t mind using real food ingredients to help my body along. There are a variety of ingredients that are excellent for improving gut health. Used individually they aid the body greatly in many ways. Used together they create a power house shot to help set your body straight!

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR DETOX ELIXIR INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Tbsp raw apple cider vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice (about 1-2 wedges)
  • 1 Tbsp raw honey
  • ¼ tsp ginger
  • Dash cayenne pepper (seriously just a dash!)

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Mix ingredients in a glass or small jar and add about an ounce of warm water. Drink all at once before eating in the morning.

Read: How to detox in 3 days

ADDITIONAL RECIPE NOTES

Drinking in the morning will allow you to absorb the nutrients quickly and get your digestive system moving.

I find that the flavors of these ingredients are a little hard to swallow, which is why I like to take it all at once. Warm water will also make it easier to drink and will help melt the honey a little so it mixes in well. However, if you are a sipper and can handle the flavors better than me, fill your glass and enjoy!

You could also triple or increase the recipe to make a batch that lasts a few days. Prepping it ahead makes it readily available and helps you to be sure to drink it consistently. Make sure and store it in the refrigerator if you make a large batch. The ACV and fresh lemon need to be refrigerated.

If you’re intimidated by the thought of drinking apple cider vinegar with a dash of cayenne, don’t be scared! Try it for a week and see how you feel. You may be surprised at the improvement to your health, just by this one simple elixir since these ingredients have more health benefits than just digestive. You may find that you have clearer, brighter skin, a stronger immune system and even more energy!

If you really want to jump start your system on a detox, take this before every meal for a few weeks. Then cut back to just before breakfast.

For longer-term, daily routine, keep it up in the mornings. Personally, I find that very doable for my season of life.

There’s nothing better than just feeling well, and making an apple cider vinegar detox elixir is a great small step to take for better health!

The Colorful Detox Drink

The Colorful Detox Drink

Ingredients:

    1 Bell Pepper
    3 Carrots
    1 Medium Cucumber
    Half a Lemon
    1 Apple

Simply juice all of the ingredients and drink fast, before the antioxidants get destroyed! This detox drink contains large amounts of vitamin c, vitamin a, a nice amount of minerals, vital for a healthy skin & powerful fat and toxin-flushing antioxidants, contained in the apple and lemon. It does taste a bit strange, but is definitely not unpleasant. Drinking a glass or two a day is extremely effective for cleansing your liver, improving your skin complexion and generally improving your health & energy levels.

The Green Tea Citrus Drink

The Green Tea Citrus Drink

Another juice that has amazing detox power!

Ingredients:

Half a cup of green tea, cooled down
The Juice of Half a Lemon
    1 Banana Blended In

This is a bit more difficult to prepare, as it requires juicing, blending AND tea brewing! But it’s worth it – the EGCG in green tea acts together with the lemon juice to rapidly detoxify your body. EGCG is absorbed much, much better in an acidic environment and when combined with minerals (the potassium from the banana). Another huge benefits is that the juice tastes very nice – you can almost get addicted to it.

The Golden Liver-Flushing Drink

The Golden Liver-Flushing Drink

Ingredients:

    Half a teaspoon of turmeric
    A bit of ginger
The Juice of half a lemon
    Half a cup of water

This juice not only flushes toxins from your liver, but it also prevents gallstones and cleans your bowels. It also settles down your stomach after a big meal. Turmeric is a very effective liver-detoxifying agent and is used as a hangover remedy in some countries. Again, combining it with lemon juice makes it even more effective. Unfortunately, this drink doesn’t taste that well. You can definitely improve it’s taste by adding a banana, but don’t add too much, as the sugar from the banana will slow down the cleansing action of the turmeric.

10 Benefits Of Lemon Detox Water

There were so many reasons to drink lemon water, and most of what I’ve found says for best benefits, you need to drink it warm, which I do. I find it soothing and relaxing. It’s totally easy to work this into my morning routine. I make my butter coffee (story for another day) and drink my lemon water while I’m doing it. Lemon water is best when you drink it warm, first thing in the morning.

8 Ways To Detox Your Body

8 Ways To Detox Your Body

When the season changes from summer to fall our body transitions from a faster metabolism to a slower one in order to save energy to get though the long winter. A fall detox is special because you want to cleanse the toxins that slow down your body and make it vulnerable to sickness while speeding up your metabolism for the winter months to avoid any winter weight gain. There are 8 simple ways to detox for fall, and you can repeat this detox at any point during the winter months to boost immunity and metabolism.

8 Ways To Detox Your Body

Greens: Eating greens like kale, broccoli, cabbage and cucumbers is like absorbing sunshine; it keeps your body happy all winter long when sunshine is scarce. Eating green also helps to regulate your body’s systems, removes toxins from the body, and boots immunity.

Sweet vegetables: Pumpkin, sweet potatoes, carrots and beets are all great choices for a fall detox. These seasonal vegetables cut the cravings for chocolate and sweets that we feel in the winter. Add them to your menu to avoid cravings altogether! The beta-carotene and vitamin A also boost immunity and protect your skin and eyes from damage.

Whole Grains: To really kick your detox into high gear, stick to grains in their whole form and avoid all flours and foods that are separated, like wheat germ or bran. When you eat grains in their whole form like barley, oats, wheat berries, quinoa, or millet, they work like sponges in the body. The soluble fiber absorbs cholesterol and the releasing toxins to remove them from the body.

Water: The winter is very drying on the skin, which is our biggest organ. To protect your skin and to wash out all of the releasing toxins, it is vital to drink 2-3 liters of water a day. This includes decaffeinated, unsweetened teas or flavored water without sugar.

Movement: Sweat is the best way to warm up the body to increase metabolism as well as excrete all the junk you are detoxing. 30-60 minutes of sweat-inducing exercise is best. This can be a killer Pilates class or a heart busting cardio routine. Mix it up and have fun! As long as you are sweating, you are detoxifying your body. In the winter, begin your yoga or Pilates routine in sweat pants and a sweater until your body warms up, then strip off the layers while you complete the workout.

Sugar: Avoid sugar and artificial sweeteners while detoxing. These are one of the greatest forms of toxins you are exposed to every day. Stick to 2 tablespoons total of agave nectar or Stevia during your detox.

Dairy: When the weather cools down, reduce your dairy intake to one cup a day at most to avoid excess mucus, and try to buy organic when possible to avoid the antibiotics. During the detox, avoid dairy and use almond milk instead.

Oils: Stick to olive oil during the detox to lubricate your body. The Omega-3 fat enhances your body’s fat burning abilities.

THE BEST PROTEIN POWDER FOR EVERY GOAL

THE BEST PROTEIN POWDER

The varieties available have radically expanded from whey into beef and egg on one end of the spectrum, and a garden’s worth of plants on other: pea, hemp and rice just to name a few. First, know this: Plant protein is more slimming than milk-derived proteins. Next, different varieties have qualities that make them the best choices depending on your lifestyle needs. We’ve broken down a few of them here.

TO GAIN MUSCLE
Jay Robb Enterprises Egg White Protein

For a better option that’ll help you bulk up only in desirable areas, try egg-white protein, which is naturally low-carb and no-fat. This option has 25 grams of protein and 115 calories per serving.

Add proteins to lose weight

protein is your secret weight-loss

Protein-rich foods can help you to lose weight on many levels.
“Firstly, they will make you feel fuller after eating. Proteins are digested more slowly than carbs, and stay in the stomach for longer,” says Shona.

“It can also help you to digest carbohydrates when eaten together as a meal. That means that you will not only have your energy released more even during the day but also it will stop you from having sugar cravings.”

Also, protein can help to maintain or improve your muscle mass and growth.

“This simply means having more toned silhouette and also maintaining a healthy metabolism - muscle burns more energy than fat!,” Shona adds.

“Unless you’re lifting heavy weights for several hours a day, you won’t turn into a female Arnold Schwarzenegger –promise!

Which foods are good sources of protein and how much do you actually need?

Shona suggests that the richest sources of protein are lean meat, fish and eggs, followed by cheese and yoghurt.

Other diet plant foods you can also include in your diet plant foods, nuts and seeds, beans, chickpeas and lentils, although they contain less protein than animal foods.

She explains: “On average, a woman needs 1g of protein per kilo body weight per day. This means that a woman weighing 60kg needs at least 60g of protein, which is equivalent to two chicken breasts, four eggs or three cups of cooked lentils.

“If you eat meat or fish and other animal foods once or twice a day, you’re probably getting enough but if you’re vegetarian or vegan then you’ll need to keep an eye on how much protein you’re getting.”

What’s the best way to get my protein?

For a healthy weight and shape, it is not only how much but when you eat your protein.

“To help control your appetite and balance your energy levels, it is best to have protein-rich foods with every meal and snack. This generally means having about 15 to 20g of protein each time.

“If you are struggling with including protein in your diet try to add chickpeas or lentils to your soup, pumping seeds to yoghurt or spreading almond butter on your toast instead of jam,” she adds.

Protein powders – yes or no?

Shona suggests that protein powders are a good way to get your source of protein.

“There are plenty of options available nowadays, although whey is the most popular with sports people, you can also find plant-based protein powders such as rice, pea, soya and hemp proteins. They can be added to smoothies, shakes, juices (always choose vegetable juices rather than fruit, to cut the sugar), and some can even be added to savoury meals such as soups or stews.

“Some protein powders are especially formulated for supporting body shape and tone. As well as protein, they can contain ingredients such as green tea, cinnamon, guarana, caffeine that may help with metabolism and weight loss.”
